Sounds like you have bought a Chinese knock off mate. The real product costs three times what you paid! And it works 100%

Couldn't get past the first page where you select Port and language, suspect it was a driver error but despite erasing off my laptop completely (Revo Uninstaller) and re-installing I kept getting the same problem. I bought this off eBay £15.00, came with no instructions except built-in run through demo's in Mandarin on the supplied disc, trolled net looking for workaround but found nothing of any use, definitely not plug and play, UI looks pretty basic too, luckily it seems as if the supplied OBD cable can be used with other available programmes like OBD2spy which I have yet to try, at least they have pretty good star rating not like ' Formidable ', sorry, big thumbs down from me. : (
